General
The Ocus®20 and Ocus®40 differ in image resolution and magnification capabilities. Ocus®20 provides an image resolution of 0.50 µm/pixel (20x magnification), making it ideal for workflows requiring faster scanning speeds, such as intraoperative frozen sections. Ocus®40 offers a higher resolution of 0.25 µm/pixel (40x magnification), suitable for detailed cytology and histology applications where high-resolution imaging is critical.
Ocus®40’s higher resolution makes it versatile for various applications, including basic histology and cytology. Ocus®20 is ideal for cases requiring faster scans, such as intraoperative frozen sections, where 20x magnification is adequate.
The Ocus® System offers a compact design, easy installation, competitive pricing (no ongoing fees), and high-resolution imaging. Its ease of use and portability make it an ideal solution for labs and remote pathology applications.
We do have customers using tape coverslip successfully. However, factors like tissue thickness and coverslip quality can affect image clarity, so it’s recommended to ensure proper sample preparation for optimal results.
Yes, Ocus® scanners support remote access via VPN or Grundium’s routing service. To connect remotely, open the firewall port TCP 471 for outbound connections only, allowing secure access to the scanner.
Ocus® scanners come with their own web-based viewer, compatible with SVS and TIFF export formats commonly used in digital pathology. For additional viewer software, any third-party application that supports these formats can be used. DICOM will be supported in 2025.
The Ocus was not designed for hematology.
Yes, access to the Ocus® viewer software is free and can be shared with multiple users. The viewer supports stored images on the scanner. For exported images, a third-party viewer is required. The Ocus® supports up to eight simultaneous users, with one operator at a time.
With Ocus®40, you can store 250–300 scans of 2x2 cm slides. Ocus®20 image files are smaller, due to which it accommodates 500–600 scans of similar sample size.
File sizes depend on the area scanned. With Ocus®40, image files range from 0.3–1.5 GB.
Ocus®20 scans are approximately half the size of Ocus®40 files, due to the lower resolution.
Yes, Ocus® scanners are compatible with paraffin section slides, provided they are suitable for examination under a 20x or 40x brightfield microscope.
Currently, no AI processing solutions are built into the scanner. However, images scanned with Ocus® can be used with third-party AI algorithms for analysis and training.
There are no mandatory annual licenses or maintenance fees for Ocus® scanners. An additional Service Contract is available to purchase, which acts as an extended warranty. Under Grundium’s fair use policy, there is no user limit; up to eight users can be registered, but only one can operate the scanner at a time.
Yes, the Ocus® scanners are built with a durable aluminum body and rated IK06 for impact resistance. However, as high-precision instruments, they should be handled with care and always secured with a travel pin during transport.
For optimal use, place the Ocus® scanner on a flat, stable surface with at least 10 cm (4 inches) of free space around it.
Yes, feature updates are included during the warranty period, also during extended warranty. Security updates are free of charge also after the warranty period.
Ocus® scanners are designed to be user-friendly, with most users learning to operate them within 15 minutes. Training videos are available on Grundium’s YouTube channel, and online onboarding sessions can be purchased if additional guidance is needed.
The package dimensions for one Ocus®20 or Ocus®40 scanner are 58 x 36 x 52 cm / 22.8 x 14.2 x 20.5 inches, and the weight is 10 kg / 22 lbs.
For five units, the dimensions are 120 x 100 x 69 cm / 47.2 x 39.4 x 27.2 inches, with a total weight of 70 kg / 154 lbs. Five units are delivered on a pallet.
Yes, scientific articles using Grundium scanners are available in databases like PubMed and Google Scholar. We also feature selected publications on our site under Scientific Articles.
The Ocus® viewer includes an overview image that displays the label, which is saved as part of the metadata. The barcode information can also be used in naming the image file. However, a separate barcode reader is not integrated.

Security
In Europe, Ocus® devices are classified as IVDR Class A medical devices. In the USA, they are currently designated for Research Use Only (RUO).
Grundium is ISO13485 certified. We are also pursuing ISO27001 Security certification for data and information security, expected by the end of 2024.
All data and files are stored locally on the scanner’s built-in 500GB SSD storage. Data is not transferred to Grundium’s servers or any external servers.
Yes, all data stored on the Ocus® scanner is encrypted at rest. When accessed remotely, Ocus® uses secure protocols similar to those in online banking, with HTTPS encryption for all data in transit. Files are saved outside of the scanner only when explicitly exported by the user. Image data is never stored in Grundium Cloud.
No, Ocus® does not automatically back up image data. Users should export data to a preferred external storage solution (local or network) if a backup is needed.
Yes, Ocus® scanners have a Kensington lock slot on the back, allowing physical security measures to prevent unauthorized movement or theft.
Yes, the USB port on Ocus® scanners can be physically secured with a USB lock to prevent unauthorized access.
All data within the Ocus® scanner is encrypted. No data is stored in the cloud or on users' devices unless the user exports the images manually.
Yes, backups are possible but require user action. Users can export the images from the device to their preferred external storage (USB or Network drive) for backup purposes.
